"Thanks for a great course. It was truly the best course I have taken in all my 24 years of teaching. I am very excited about using what I have learned in my class next and sharing it with my school." --Marcia Suojanen, North Broward Elementary, Pompano Beach, Florida

Participants can enjoy a classic Western North Carolina mountain summer while working in a productive academic environment. Asheville bustles with activities including restaurants, plays, music, beautiful drives and talks with friendly folks.

Throughout the school year, Poetry Alive! focuses on poem performance as a way to study poetry. Our summer residency allows us to share the Poetry Alive! approach with you so that you will be able to carry this method back to your school district and to your classroom.

Our week begins on Sunday afternoon with a Poetry Alive! performance, and it ends Thursday night with you and your workshop partners performing your own Poetry Alive! show for the public. The daily sessions are designed to ease you towards your performance, so that by show time on Thursday night, your presentation will be safe, comfortable and polished.

Each session is limited to 25 participants. The cost is $800.00 for the week. Included in this price are materials, dorm room accommodations (double occupancy*) as well as all meals beginning on Sunday and running through lunch on Friday. We throw in a trip to Carl Sandburg's farm, Connemara, a Poetry Alive! "T", and a special Night Out meal at a great local restaurant to boot!!

The session is approved for both CEU's and Masters level credit. Additional fees will be required to process these credits. Call our office for details.

*Single rooms (with shared bathroom) are available for an extra $180.00.

"Everything about this week can and will be used in my classroom. Poetry Alive! makes me excited that my students will no longer say, 'I don't understand that poem.' When a poem comes to life, and performance is the teacher, the words don't just go from the page to the stage, they dance and sing and weep and purrr! Thank you."
--Martha Womeldorph, Archbishop McCarthy Catholic High, Fort Lauderdale, Florida

"The Poetry Alive! Summer Residency is one of those rare, once in a lifetime experiences that impacts on a person professionally and personally in a meaningful and lasting way!! The information I learned and the skills I gained have become an important part of my teaching repertoire! The relationships I developed and the adventure I undertook added a new element of joy to my life! I look forward with a great deal of gratitude and excitement to sharing what I have learned with teachers throughout the country! Thank you Allan, Cheryl, and everyone at Poetry Alive!"
--Andy Baumgartner, 1999 United States Teacher of the Year
